{"id":149,"date":"2012-07-03T14:31:23","date_gmt":"2012-07-03T18:31:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sefpc.org\/?page_id=149"},"modified":"2012-07-25T09:26:02","modified_gmt":"2012-07-25T13:26:02","slug":"how-hydropower-works-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sefpc.org\/?page_id=149","title":{"rendered":"How Hydropower Works"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"one_half\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Hydrologic Cycle:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>Water constantly moves through a vast global cycle in which it:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Evaporates from lakes and oceans,<br \/>\n\u2022 Forms clouds,<br \/>\n\u2022 Precipitates as rain or snow, and<br \/>\n\u2022 Then flows back to the sea.<\/p>\n<p>The energy of this water cycle, which is driven by the sun,is tapped most efficiently with hydropower.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Types of Hydropower Facilities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Impoundment Hydropower \u2013 Uses a dam to store water (see illustration). Water may be released to meet changing electricity needs and maintain appropriate reservoir levels.<\/p>\n<p>Diversion Hydropower \u2013 Channels a portion of the river through a canal to a penstock, but may require a dam.<\/p>\n<p>Pumped Storage \u2013 Pumps water from a lower reservoir to an upper reservoir at times when demand for electricity is low.
